This article focuses on the tips and tricks for using Adobe Acrobat, and believe us, they are plenty. Let’s start by explaining the software environment of the Adobe Reader.
1. Examining the environment - Acrobat Reader Toolbar Buttons
The Acrobat Reader can be loaded inside your web browser or started as a separate application. Either way, the toolbar appears on the top of the screen, and consists of a "save file" icon button, a "printer" icon button, "show/hide", a "copy" icon, an icon that shows a "hand," to grab and move the acrobat page around, a button that show a magnifying glass - to change the size of the Acrobat image in the window, a "text tool" icon - a button with "T”, and several other buttons toward the right-hand side of the page.
The copy button is used in combination with the “text tool” icon to copy into the clipboard the text highlighted with the use of the T button. You can paste this selected text to any other application on your computer.
The "hand" icon button is activated only when you open a document. Once you click it, the mouse cursors will appear as a hand that you can use to move around on an Acrobat document page, like scrolling the document upwards or downwards, to the left or right.
Also take a look at the bottom right of the Acrobat screen/window where you will find a little section that says "Page 1 of 5" (or whatever the number of pages the document may be). You can use this field to enter a specific page number to go to in a document. This is especially helpful if the document has many pages and you know what page you want to use. |

The binoculars icon is the "find" button. If you click on this button, a pop-up window will appear and allow you to specify a text search within an Acrobat document. It is similar to "find/search" functions in every word processing software.
2. Integrating Sound into your PDF Documents
Integrating sound into PDF documents is a relatively new technology available at your disposal in order to enhance the user experience.
In Acrobat Professional, sound can be added via two different methods. One is the Attach Sound tool (found in the Advanced Commenting toolbar) that allows you to attach a sound file as an audio comment or lets you record sound comments directly into Acrobat via a microphone. The other tool is the Sound Tool (found in the Advanced Editing toolbar). This allows you to incorporate pre-recorded sounds into your PDF documents.
The Attach Sound feature works only with .wav files for Windows® or .aiff files on Mac, but once the sound is added, it becomes a part of the PDF file, it is not a separate file that needs to be downloaded, it is embedded within the document, hence it can be played on any user’s machine with any of the Acrobat family of products. One tip here: less is more. Don’t overuse this feature as it can become annoying and distract the readers.
